CROWNS

If there is little tooth tissue remaining above the gum or a heavily filled tooth has become damaged, a crown maybe necessary. A crown can be placed after the tooth has been prepared by shaving of a layer all around creating the required space. Like inlays they usually require 2 appointments, (unless Advanced Cerec crowns are being used, which only require 1 appointment). There are main types of crown.

  • Metal Crowns: These can be made of different types of metal including gold. These kind of crowns are used where aesthetics are not a priority, however they provide excellent strength properties.
  • Bonded Crowns: These are crowns that match the teeth and are aesthetically pleasing, so they can be placed on front teeth. They are made with a metal base under a layer of tooth coloured porcelain.
